Vigilantsurvivalkits.com is a small business located in southwest Indiana where ice storms, tornadoes, and even earthquakes can be experienced. However, despite the multitude of disasters that can occur in our quaint Midwestern town; the idea for Vigilantsurvivalkits.com was born in a Utah slot canyon after being stuck on a rock overnight without the right supplies.
An Exciting Opportunity
It all started in Zion National Park with my dad, mom, and brother. The Narrows. A 16 mile long hike through the Virgin River. What seems as though it should be an easy day trek is made much more difficult as there is no defined trail, just the route of the river as it has sliced its way through the canyon. Permits are required to hike the canyon and it is recommended to obtain one in advance as it can be hard to get one on day you plan to hike. Hard, but possible as we would find out. After standing in line for several hours, it was finally our turn. Much to our surprise, somebody had backed out, providing an opening for us to get a permit. But at this point it was getting late in the day. However, having planned only one day in the park, and against the advice of the Ranger, we decided to continue with the hike.
Hiking the Narrows
We were shuttled to the top of the canyon and began our trek down to the river. The beautiful scenery and downhill slope of the hike made it seem we were traveling at a quick pace. We took a few short breaks for food and water. However, we were soon passed by two Rangers who advised us that we needed to pick up the pace, or risk being stuck in the canyon overnight. We continued to push, but darkness started to fall quickly, accelerated by the high walls of the canyon.
Soon, twilight turned to night, and it was too dark to see. Although we had headlamps, they were no match for the darkness of the canyon and the rushing water. It became difficult to see the route ahead and impossible to determine the depth of the water. With several connecting canyons, it became difficult to determine which way the route went.
We would soon find ourselves going up the wrong canyon, working our way to a dead end. I attempted to find a way around, but ended up falling off a log into shoulder deep water. As the temperature continued dropping, I was cold, tired, hungry, and now very wet. We decided we had no choice but to camp for the night. No shelter, no fire, and limited supplies. My mom had fortunately packed an emergency blanket, something I thought we would never need. One blanket for four people on a small rock in a rushing stream. It was a cold, sleepless night. Morning seemed to take forever to come.
A Way Out
But the sun soon rose, and we were again able to find our way. We eventually made our way back to the main trail and finished the remaining part. We all learned some valuable lessons as we left the trail that morning. First, you really need to start early if you are going to finish The Narrows in one day. Second, you always need to be prepared for things to not go as planned. If we had an emergency kit, we would have had plenty of shelter, warmth, and food to get us through the night much more comfortably.
